Library opening

Recounts

On Friday morning at school we had Kyle Mewburn and Melinda Szymanik come to our library opening.  They are New Zealand authors.  At the opening we had a powhiri and the children did a haka.  After the speeches we went to Room 25 and Kyle talked to us about when he was young and when he got into trouble at school.  Then he read us some stories.  He was good at reading them.  After the stories we had a hangi for lunch.  It tasted yummy.  I had a wonderful day at school.  By Pamela

On Friday we got to wear costumes because of the library opening.  I was Snow White.  For lunch there was a hangi.  Before lunch Kyle Mewburn and Melinda Szymanik read books to us.  Kyle read Old Huhu and Melinda read us The Were-Nana.  On Friday it was a fantastic day for me.  By Shafiyah

On Friday there was an opening for the library.  We did the haka powhiri.  We sang for the authors Kyle Mewburn and Melinda Szymanik.  Adam’s mum helped with the hangi.  We had chicken, potato, cabbage, stuffing, kumara, pumpkin and carrots.  I liked it when Melinda read The Were-Nana to the class.  By Shineil

Snake and Lizard

Published by under Uncategorized and tagged: , ,

snake and lizardWe were so lucky to get to see the show “Snake and Lizard” at the Pumphouse Theatre in Takapuna.  It was adapated by Tim Bray from the popular story by Joy Cowley.  For some of us, it was the first time going to the theatre, and for others, our first time crossing the harbour bridge.  As well as seeing the play, we got to revisit our topic from last term by spotting landmarks such as Rangitoto Island and the Sky Tower.

We have been reading the book in class, and we wondered how the characters would be brought to life.  We knew they wouldn’t have a real snake and lizard on stage.  We thought they might use puppets, or that the actors would wear snake and lizard costumes.  We were right – there were actors and puppets!

At the end of the play, the actors were outside the theatre to say hello and give us high fives as we left.  It was awesome!

Extreme Makeover

Published by under Uncategorized and tagged: ,

Before the holidays Mrs Tregoweth told us that we would be getting new “composition” (a fancy name for wall coverings), all over our classroom.  The new stuff is a lovely green, like a Granny Smith apple.  It is spongy and very easy to get staples in and out of.  Here are some “before” and “after” pictures of our makeover.  Pop your head in and have a look!

Ta da!!
What we think:
  • Josh “It’s cool.  The wall is soft and we can put our lizard pictures up.”
  • William “I was shocked to see the change.  It’s my favourite colour.  There are lots of things on there.”
  • Te Kahukoka “It’s fantastic.  The green looks nice.  The walls all match.”
  • Lynda “It’s different and better than the other wall.  The colour green is better than the brown.”
  • Elizabeth “We did all the artwork that is up. It looks clean”

Our PVA bike prints

What a busy term it’s been!  On Thursday we had our whole school arts exhibition.  During the day classes were able to go into the hall and admire all the artwork that each child in the school had produced.  Room 4′s artwork was displayed with others in Puriri team – they all looked absolutely amazing.  In the evening, our families came to look at our awesome work and watch performances that many children were involved in.

It was lovely to talk to parents and hear how proud they were of their children’s work.  Tino pai Room 4!

Green Day

Published by under Uncategorized

This term, our focus for Green Day was on getting our environment clean and beautiful.  After helping Ms Christison plant some new succulents, Rooms 4 and 5 headed out with rubbish bags to pick up as much rubbish as we could from around the school.  Ms Mey and Mrs Polkinghorne were so impressed with the children who were picking up tiny bits of rubbish like plastic straw wrappers and broken bits of plastic that had been on the ground for a long, long time.  By the end of the day, with the planting, weeding and tidying that everyone in the school had done, our school was looking beautiful.  Let’s keep it that way!

Stepping Out

Published by under Uncategorized and tagged: ,

Constable Sue came to Puriri Team on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to talk to us about road safety.  As well as taking us out for a walk and helping us to identify hazards such as sneaky driveways, she explained about her police uniform and let us get in her car and buckle up.  Some of us got to speak on the loud hailer and Ms Mey even got to turn on the siren!  We also did a role play to help us remember the rules for being safe passengers in a car.  Constable Sue was a passenger and she made us laugh when she did things to distract the driver.  It made us realise that passengers need to have their seatbelts on and stay quiet so that the driver can concentrate.

Rest in peace Kashin

Published by under Uncategorized and tagged: ,

We were all so sad that Kashin the elephant at Auckland Zoo passed away on Monday.  We did some writing with Mrs Polkinghorne on Wednesday about how we felt.  Thanks Mrs Polkinghorne for making  this into a beautiful book for our class.

I feel sad that Kashin died. She had pain in her legs so yesterday the zoo keepers planned what to do with Kashin. They called the vet. He put an injection in Kashin to make her go to sleep.  Burma is lonely without Kashin. If they can’t find a friend for Burma they might have to send her away and that will be sad.  (By Talhah)

I feel sad because Kashin died. I miss her and everyone will miss her too. Poor Burma will miss Kashin as well. The zoo was closed and nobody went to the zoo yesterday. Burma is by herself. She will not see Kashin again. (By Maria)

Kashin was a good girl. On Monday she died. Burma will be lonely for the rest of her life. I feel sad. Burma is looking for Kashin. They dug a big hole and they needed a crane to lower her body down. They gave her an injection, she’ll never wake up. Kashin was 40 years old. Her friend is lonely. Burma is the friend. She is 26 years old. If the vets don’t look for another elephant Burma might have to go. (By Ayuub)

I am feeling sad because on Monday Kashin died and I wish she was still alive so I could go to the zoo and see her. I wish I could have seen her before she died. I wish I could have said goodbye to her before she died.  (By Grace)

Kashin was my favourite elephant. She died on Monday and she was 40 years old. I got to ride on her back once and she was Indian. I saw Kashin struggling one day and the zoo keeper came and fed her. Kashin had a good life at Auckland Zoo. I like Kashin she made me happy sometimes. She will never forget the zoo and the zoo keepers will never forget Kashin. I have a Kashin bank account and a yellow money box. I hope they find another elephant. Burma is 26 years old. Kashin had sore legs and was very very sick. She was a good friend of the zoo keepers. She was born in India and was brought to New Zealand. Kashin met Burma at the zoo.  (By Josh)

Banana smoothies, anyone?

Published by under Uncategorized and tagged: ,

Continuing our dairy theme, we made banana smoothies today and wrote a procedure so anyone can make a smoothy if they want to.  Lucky William got to be our official taster and let us know what to add more or less of.

Banana smoothy (a procedure by Shafiyah)

Goal: to make a banana smoothy

Materials: Banana, yoghurt, milk, cups, blender

Steps:

1.  Peel the banana and put it in the blender

2.  Open the yoghurt and put it into the blender

3.  Pour the milk into the blender.

4.  Put the lid on top of the blender.

5.  Turn on the blender.

6.  Taste the banana smoothy.  If it doesn’t taste right, add more banana, yoghurt or milk.
